Hugo LX – Ascent

Earlier this year we grabbed Hugo LX’s ‘Infinite Ways’ EP on Jazzy Couscous and it has to be one of our favourite Deep House records of the year so far. So when we saw something new was out on Menace, a reflex purchase took place. Upon listening however, the ‘Ascent EP‘ couldn’t be more different from the murky, deeep House on Infinite Ways. Ascent is a collection of short downtempo/instrumental Hip Hop tracks with plenty of warm vibes that are an integral ingredient to Deep House production. Hugo LX doesn’t just slow the tempo to 90BPM as some House producers do when producing Hip-Hop; the beats here are authentic and the whole record is a brief but enveloping listen. More solid work from Hugo LX – here’s to hoping he produces an album…
