Sustainer – Medicina
More fine work on Eilean Recs, this time from Spanish artist Sustainer whose work we’ve enjoyed previously on Tessellate Recordings, Room40 and Audiotalaia to name but a few. Here with Medicina, Alex Alarcón assembles a vast collection of 60s and 70s soundtrack recordings into a set of looping chamber drone pieces. The sound is joined by field recordings and the loops play out with a repetition that will fill your room with a magical, majestic sonic aroma. For me, although being incredibly different, I can’t help but recall Jan Jelinek’s Loop Finding Jazz Records. Indeed, Alarcón allows his vinyl samples play out a bit more, but it is within the repetitions that the mesmeric suspense is built.
