Saltland – A Common Truth
I was first alerted to the sound of Rebecca Foon having purchased Esmerine’s ‘La Lechuza’ on Constellation Records a few years back. It was a record in which Foon featured, lending cello and vocals. ‘A Common Truth‘ is her latest effort for Constellation and follows 2013′s ‘I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us‘ and to my ears, is some of her best work yet. Firstly, the overall package is utterly beautiful, as the label makes this available in a lavish looking vinyl presentation.
‘A Common Truth‘ was written with climate change in mind as in part, Rebecca looks to raise awareness with her being a founder member of the concert series ‘Pathway To Paris’. The 9 tracks here see cello as the primary instrument as you might expect, with various techniques deployed. It has an eastern feel at times and avoids falling into the modern classical bracket completely. In part, the record has hints of rock and electronic production techniques and together with vocals placed in certain tracks, this makes for a truly unique record that is not to be missed.
